Salt & Sunlight
Description
It was early morning in Muizenberg, and I had just come out of the water after a beautiful surf. The beach already filling with families, longboarders and the usual colour and movement this place is known for. In the middle of all that life, he sat alone in the bright light, eating food he had taken from a bin.
The contrast stopped me. His thick beard, weathered skin and textured hands caught the sun in a way that revealed a life shaped by far more than the ocean breeze around us. While the beach buzzed with its usual energy, he stayed completely absorbed in what he was doing, quiet and still against the backdrop of a place usually defined by joy and noise.
This portrait holds that moment of separation: a man on the margins of a vibrant beachfront, framed by morning light and the reality of his day.
